How the two plans work
Tiered Standard
A fixed monthly payment. The term depends on your total Direct Loan balance when you enter repayment.
| Balance | Term |
|---|---|
| Under $25,000 | 10 years |
| $25,000 to under $50,000 | 15 years |
| $50,000 to under $100,000 | 20 years |
| $100,000 or more | 25 years |
Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP)
- Your payment is a share of your AGI, from 1% to 10%. The rate applies to all of your AGI, not just the part in the bracket.
- Your payment drops by $50 a month for each dependent, and is never less than $10.
- If your payment doesn't cover the interest, the unpaid interest is waived. If it pays down less than $50 of principal, the government matches the difference.
- If you file jointly, the payment is based on joint AGI and split by each spouse's share of your combined federal loan balance.
- Any balance left after 360 qualifying payments is forgiven, and may be taxable.
| AGI | Share of AGI |
|---|---|
| $10,000 or less | $10 a month |
| $10,001 to $20,000 | 1% |
| $20,001 to $30,000 | 2% |
| $30,001 to $40,000 | 3% |
| $40,001 to $50,000 | 4% |
| $50,001 to $60,000 | 5% |
| $60,001 to $70,000 | 6% |
| $70,001 to $80,000 | 7% |
| $80,001 to $90,000 | 8% |
| $90,001 to $100,000 | 9% |
| $100,001 or more | 10% |
